DREA & SAM
Honestly, we're just two girls a long way from home trying to get by with a little help from our friends and this blog apparently. Sam, SPARKY, is in Bloomingtom, Indiana for 10 months of the year and Drea, IGOTNOTHING, is in Boston, Mass. for those 10 months but every so often, they find themselves "comfortably" at home in Los Angeles, Ca. We're pretty cool, no lie.

I believe in TOMS. Love the product. Love that it takes a vice like consumerism into something so positive. I recently applied to be an intern for the summer and I really hope I get it, but even if I don't, I'm glad I tried.

Anyway, one of the questions asked about the theme of giving and I thought I'd share, though its nothing special. Here it is..

In the most technical sense of the word, “giving” is losing. If person A gives person B a dollar, person A has lost that dollar with absolutely nothing to show for it. The way “giving” works is that one side gives while the other takes.

Because we are unable to measure this transaction in numbers, value or other technical terms, many of us have lost sight on what it means to give. Expressions like “I can’t afford to help” express this concern about losing something. This person considers his or herself to be able to afford things with price tags, but can’t afford to walk away empty handed.

Let’s stop for a second. Where would we be in this world if we took everything so technically? When you give, you get more in return than you have “lost.” Words like “giving” that place intangible concepts into the equation are usually misplaced among our capitalist society. When a person gives something, whether it is an object or a donation, they are not only giving a material object, but they are giving compassion.

The real transaction is one of faith; as the giver or receiver, which at this point is almost indistinguishable, one is engulfed in a feeling of faith: faith in humanity, faith in each other, faith in our connections as human beings as we are a species who cannot survive without living in groups. To give means to say “I understand;” “we are the same.”
