DREA & SAM
Honestly, we're just two girls a long way from home trying to get by with a little help from our friends and this blog apparently. Sam, SPARKY, is in Bloomingtom, Indiana for 10 months of the year and Drea, IGOTNOTHING, is in Boston, Mass. for those 10 months but every so often, they find themselves "comfortably" at home in Los Angeles, Ca. We're pretty cool, no lie.

A lot of people lately, myself included, have been saying that they wish they could help in Haiti.

I was reading an article today and the best part of it was a quote from a speaker that came to my school.

“The first thing you ask is, how can I help?” Onyango said. “You need to ask yourself, critically, can I handle the emotional overload? If you see a hundred dead bodies, is this something you can deal with?” If not, she warned, “You will be a burden.” Onyango reminded the group that there is no hurry to help: there will be on-site opportunities in Haiti for months and years to come. “All those cameras are going to go away, and the people will be left to their own devices,” she said.

People will be left to their own devices. That's amazing. Because it's so true. When the media stops, we'll stop caring. And even then, there's nothing we can do at this point.

Part of me wanted to go to Haiti. sure. Do what I could "for the greater good" and all that. But what could I possibly have to offer there at this moment? Everyone is trying to leave. I have no experience. & I'd probably break down to be honest (plus the obvious reason that I'm broke, in school and my parents would never let me.)

There's time to help. Like she said. Haiti will still be there in a few years once it's more stable if you still want to go then. Just don't forget it's there just because the articles aren't front page anymore. Remember. Post articles. Think. Be Present. Be Aware.

And I was thinking this morning (kind of irrelevantly) how badly I wanted to shop. I'm stressed. Material things make me happy. I can feel the new sneakers on my feet. But instead, I think I'll donate some more. And I think if you care enough to "want to go to Haiti," you can spare $5 ($10, $20, I don't know, it's your budget..) to give to relief funds.
